The Second International Conference on the Future of the Book

eBook Technology - Present and Future

Mike Ottoy.

eBook technology, in the form of reading devices, has been with us for the past six years. During that time very little has changed with respect to the technology, manufacturers have come and gone and publishers remain uncertain as to what path or paths they should be taking. Yet for all of its uncertain past, the knowledge gained out of numerous industry trials worldwide leads us to anticipate a very exciting future.

This workshop explores the changes in the eBook industry, particularly since the last conference, and discusses what the future holds. It also analyses the outcomes of trials held in Australia particularly in the University, School and Public Library sectors, and how these trials have contributed to the birth of a new industry in that country.

Finally we will be looking at an eBook lending library trial that has been underway for almost two years, and is contributing valuable research data about the public's reaction to eBook texts.
